POSITIVE ATTITUDE
Lost contracts, absent team members, missed deadlines, unrealistic clients, and that deep purple sharpie pen exploding all over your hands. We have all experienced days at work when something (or everything) goes wrong, projects don’t go as planned, conflict between colleagues arise, and we feel as though we want to pack up our things and race for the door. For some, hearing things like “stay positive” while dealing with these types of days will inevitably provoke an eye roll or cringe. Though understandable, I want to share why this little affirmation is not a cliché but important to remember during times of disappointment and negativity while you are at work.
Always looking on the bright side may be perceived as naive, but positivity can play a significant role in your productivity and success. Positive thinking, smiling, kindness, and optimism in general are main traits of a positive personal attitude, which won’t necessarily make you better at your job, but will improve the way you present yourself and the way people view you as a person making them more inclined to cheer you on and help you succeed.
Positive emotions and attitudes at work, such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and positive affect, are all associated with better job performance, increased creativity and innovation, stronger teamwork, and higher levels of job engagement and motivation. A 2022 report on workplace mental health and wellbeing by the U.S. Surgeon General reveals that a positive workplace culture has a significant impact on employee well-being, productivity, and organizational performance.
