Connection with the national education policy 2020 and the 2030 roadmap

NEP 2020 required ITEP to substitute integrated, multidisciplinary education for fragmented teacher training. ITEP will be a four-year requirement for all Indian school teachers by 2030.

Holistic curriculum

Combines cultural knowledge (Indian values, arts, tribal traditions) with global pedagogy, ensuring cultural sensitivity and adaptability. The programme integrates ed-tech training, electives in special education and technology, and promotes lifelong learning and a research mindset.

Early advantage and institutional momentum

More than forty-two central and state universities, NITs, IITs, and elite colleges have adopted ITEP, demonstrating its increasing acceptance and momentum. This academic year, more universities, including Allahabad University, are offering BA-BEd programs under ITEP, and the number of seats in central universities is increasing.

What Are The Challenges With ITEP?

Here are some of the challenges related to the ITEP that are mentioned below. Have a look at all of the major points below.

  1. In order to meet the multidisciplinary, integrated requirements of ITEP, many teacher-education colleges, particularly independent ones, lack the necessary infrastructure (labs, IT facilities) and qualified faculty. Without new hires, current employees at universities like DU, IITs, and NITs are overburdened between the new ITEP and legacy B.Ed. or B.El.Ed. programs.
  2. Colleges subject to multiple regulators are confused by the conflict between UGC’s 90-day semester guideline and ITEP’s 25-week semester structure.  There are gaps when there is uncertainty regarding the Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) and exit requirements, especially if a student leaves in the middle of the program.
  3. Some pilot institutes charge yearly fees of at least ₹5 lakh, which makes it difficult for underprivileged groups to afford them. Strict NCTE regulations may cause smaller TEd institutes in rural areas to close, which would limit local access to ITEP. Class 12 students nationwide are less likely to dedicate themselves to teaching, which results in underfilled seats at IGNOU and NITs.
  4. Critics warn that an integrated focus may weaken subject mastery by diluting subject-area knowledge. Teachers contend that lowering the requirements for teaching education courses—such as requiring a master’s degree in a subject—could compromise academic rigor.
  5. ITEP is criticized by programs such as DU’s B.Ed. Faculty was implemented hurriedly without a clear syllabus and without obtaining university approval.  The debate over the loss of institutional autonomy is sparked by ITEP’s enforcement of a rigid, uniform curriculum.
